ALLIANCE – No. 2 Mount Union clinched a share of its 30th Ohio Athletic Conference title and its 31st trip to the NCAA Division III football playoffs with a 51-3 win over Muskingum at Mount Union Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Senior quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.,) finished 3-of-7 passing for 64 yards and a touchdown while splitting time with freshman Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla.,), who finished 13-of-17 for 221 yards.
Junior running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry) had nine carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Petruccelli went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Freshman running back DeAndre Parker (Crystal River, Fla.,) also had two rushing touchdowns on six carries. Sophomore KJ Redmon (Fairborn) had 97 rushing yards and scored Mount Union's lone second-half points with a 6-yard touchdown run with :44 seconds left in the game.
Senior Trey Williams (Cardington/Cardington-Lincoln) had five tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss to lead the Purple Raiders defense.
The Purple Raiders (9-0, 8-0) scored 21 points on its first 11 offensive plays and led 24-0 after the first quarter. Petruccelli scored two rushing touchdowns in the quarter. Senior kicker Cory Barnett (Grove City/Teays Valley) kicked a 35-yard field goal after the three touchdowns.
Mount Union added three more touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 45-0 at halftime. Parker scored on a pair of short touchdown runs and Ruby caught a 70-yard pass from Plunk with just under three minutes remaining in the second quarter.
The Purple Raiders outgained the Muskies 405-30 in the first half and 623-93 for the game.
Mount Union closes out the regular season next Saturday at Marietta for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
