Football: #2 Mount Union Finishes Undefeated Regular Season

ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 2 ranked Mount Union claimed an out-right Ohio Athletic Conference football title with a 69-7 win at Marietta Saturday at Don Drumm Stadium.

It marked the 28th undefeated regular season for the Purple Raiders (10-0, 9-0 OAC), who win their 30th conference title and will make their 31st NCAA Playoff appearance next week.

D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.) threw five touchdowns passes – four to Justin Hill (Circleville) has he completed 18-of-20 passes for 296 yards. Hill finished with career-high 12 catches for 204 yards, Derrick Harvey (Akron / Buchtel) caught two touchdown passes and Josh Petruccelli (Perry) had 126 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries to lead the Mount Union offense.

The Mount Union offense scored a season-high 69 points and 699 yards while the defense held the Pioneers to 229 yards.

Ethan McComb (Huntingtown, Md.) had 2.0 sacks, Harry Bowker (St. Augustine, Fla. / Bantram Trail) had his team leading third interception of the season, Kyle Schucker (Troy, Pa.) forced a fumble and Jesse Vail (Estero, Fla.) recovered a fumble to pace the Raider defense.

Mount Union got on the board five plays into the game as Fulford found Hill on a 47-yard touchdown pass. After a three-and-out, the Raiders were on the move again marching nine plays and scoring on a Petruccelli five-yard touchdown run to lead 14-0.

Logan Domer got involved for Marietta on the next two possessions, he had a 66-yard touchdown run as Marietta cut the deficit in half, 14-7 with 5:38 left in the first quarter. It is the first touchdown Mount Union has allowed in the first quarter all year. Domer then blocked a Mount Union field goal attempt on the ensuing drive, but the Raider defense held. The Raider offense came right back and put a score up as backup quarterback Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla.) hit Harvey on a 64-yard catch and run to make it 21-7 after the first quarter.

Harvey caught his second TD of the day on the first drive of the second quarter, this time an 11-yard strike from Fulford to make it 28-7. On the next drive, Schucker forced a fumble that was recovered by Vail and the Raiders got the ball on the Pioneer 22-yard line. Three plays later, Fulford tossed his third scoring pass as he found Hill from 11 yards out to push the lead to 35-7. Plunk finished the quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Edwin Reed (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. / Dr. Krop) and the Raiders led 41-7 at the break.

Fulford tossed two more touchdowns to Hill in the third quarter to bring the score to 55-7.

Mount Union finished the scoring in the fourth quarter as Plunk threw his third touchdown pass of the game on a 15-yarder to Jordan Lee (Atlanta, Ga. / Hapeville Academy) and KJ Redmon (Fairborn) ran in a one-yard touchdown.

The NCAA will release the 32-team playoff bracket Sunday, Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. on an online selection show at NCAA.com. First round games will be Saturday. Nov. 23 at noon on campus sites.
