Men's Basketball Holds Off Pitt-Greenburg For Victory In Home Opener
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Sophomore guard Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) scored a game high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, as Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Pitt-Greensburg 81-70 in a non-conference matchup, Tuesday evening Nov. 20 in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
Mount Union improves its record to 1-2 overall while Pitt-Greensburg falls to 2-1.
Freshman Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) had 11 points and freshman Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) scored 10 to round out the double digit scorers for the Raiders, while David Palmer had 15 to lead the Bobcats.
Dylan Reigel hit the game's first basket to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead, which would be their only lead of the game. Ruffin excited the crowd at the 16:32 mark, when he took a Jacubec pass and slammed a dunk to give the Raiders an 8-4 lead. The Raiders extended the lead to 14, and took a 41-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Mount Union took its biggest lead of the game at the 14:35 mark of the second half, when Freshman Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) hit a three pointer to put the Raiders up 54-36.
The Bobcats made a late charge to cut the lead to six with 1:30 left in the second half, when Palmer scored a layup make the score 74-68.
The Raiders scored seven of the final nine points of the game for the 11 point victory.
Mount Union takes to the road in its next game, when it travels to Hiram Saturday (Nov. 24) for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff
