GAME PREVIEW: Men’s Basketball Hosts Heidelberg In OAC Home Opener

Mount Union's men's basketball team (2-5, 1-1 OAC) hosts Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Heidelberg (4-3, 0-2 OAC) Saturday afternoon (Dec. 8) at 5:00 pm in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Center.   


The Purple Raiders are coming 92-76 road win against John Carroll. This was the first time since the 07-08 season that the Raiders have won at the DeCarlo Varsity Center. 

Mount Union found themselves down 11 in the first half, and cut the lead to two going into the break.

In the second half, the Raiders led by as much as 15 in the second half and had four players in double figures and were led by sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) who scored a game-high 23 points. Freshmen Cody Dillon (Newton Falls), Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) and  Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) all had double-digit points for the Raiders and scored 20, 12 and 11 respectively. 

On the season, sophomore Nate Jacubec leads the way with 14.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals. 

Senior Matt Kiger (Williamstown, W. Va./Williamstown) has gone 25-34 (0.735) on field goals this season, which is tops in the conference.

Heidelberg is coming off a 69-60 loss against Capital in their last game. 

Last season, the Blue Streaks finished the season with an 7-18 overall record and went 5-13 in conference play. 

Nate Davis leads the Student Princes with 18.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, and has a field goal percentage of 0.634.. His 10.9 rebounds ranks first in the OAC, 18.3 points ranks second, and has a field goal percentage of 63.4% which ranks second.

Mike Fuline (Kent State '98) is 13-20 is in his second season as head coach at Mount Union after a successful career at the high school level that included winning the 2010 OHSAA Division I State Championship at Massillon Jackson.  Prior to coach at Massillon, he was the head coach at Rootstown high school (2003-2005). At Rootstown, his 2003-04 team posted a 16-6 record and won a sectional championship while his 2004-05 team went 20-4, shared the league title and won a district championship. Fuline was named 2004 Ohio's Division III Co-Coach of the Year.

Anthony Gholson (Ohio Northern '88) is 46-67 is in his fifth season as head coach. During the 2009-10 season, Gholson guided the Berg to a 15-13 overall and 9-9 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Berg made its 49th appearance in the OAC Tournament, including its fourth-straight. Along the tournament trail, Heidelberg posted upsets over no. 4 Ohio Northern in the semifinals and unseated no. 1 John Carroll on its home court to make its seventh trip to the OAC Tournament Championship game.Under his guidance, Gholson has coached four All-OAC and four Academic All-OAC honorees, along with an OAC Player of the Year and a DIII News honoree.
