Men’s Basketball Holds Off Heidelberg In OAC Home Opener
ALLIANCE, Ohio - - Sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) scored a game-high 19 points as Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Heidelberg 68-67 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Center.
With the win, Mount Union now has won two straight and improves its record to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in the OAC, while Heidelberg falls to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Along with Jacubec, freshman Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) had 11 points to round out the double digit scorers for the Purple Raiders, and Nate Davis had a double-double with 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Student Princes.
The first half had back and forth action with both team combining for seven lead changes, with the Raiders taking a 36-35 lead into halftime.
The Raiders would lead by as much as six in the second half, but the Student Princes fought back every time Mount Union would try and extend the lead.
Davis scored a layup and converted his free-throw to tie the game at 67 with 1:17 left to go in the game.
Moore converted on one of two free-throws with forty-four seconds left to put the Raiders up 68-67, which turned out to be the game winner.
The Student Princes had the last possession, but the Raiders defense proved too strong as Davis put up a shot as time expired, but it fell short and Mount Union would come out with the victory 68-67.
Mount Union's next game is next Saturday (Dec.15) when they travel to Westerville, Ohio to take on Otterbein at 7:30 p.m.
