BEREA, Ohio - - Sophomore guard Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored a season-high 19 points, but Mount Union's men's basketball team would fall to Baldwin Wallace 80-71 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game, Wednesday evening (Dec 20.) in the Ursprung Gymnasium.
With the win, Baldwin Wallace improves to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the OAC, while Mount Union falls to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Along with Griffin, sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) had a double-double scoring 15 points and tying a season-high with 10 rebounds and freshman Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) added 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Purple Raiders. Kyle Payne scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Yellow Jackets.
The first ten minutes both teams battled each other and the score stayed close, as there were seven lead changes with neither team leading by more than five points.
Ben Umbrel scored on a layup with 3:34 left in the first half, which capped a 15-6 run and gave the yellow Jackets an 11 point lead at 36-25 lead which was their largest lead of the half.
The Purple Raiders would end the first half on a 10-3 run, which was capped by a T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/St. John's) three-pointer with 57 seconds left in the half to make the score 39-35 at the break.
Kyle Payne scored the first nine points of the second half for the Jackets over the first 4:55 of the second period to make the score 48-35.
Griffin scored ten straight points for the Raider to cut the defecit to seven, 52-45.
Jacubec scored a layup with 12:27 remaining in the game to cut the Jackets lead to 5, 52-47, as that would be the closest the Raiders would get for the rest of the game.
Kevin Krawkowiak hit a three-pointer with 2:59 left in the game as the lead would increase to 19, which was their biggest lead of the game, as the Jackets would get the victory 80-71.
Mount Union takes a break for the Holiday's as their next game is December 29 in the Defiance Purple & Gold Tournament against Adrian (Mich) with tip scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
