Men's Basketball Falls On The Road To Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio - - Freshman Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) scored a career-high 20 points but the Mount Union men's basketball team fell 97-90 at Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday night.

With the win, Marietta improves to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the OAC, while Mount Union falls to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the conference. 

Sophomore Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) and freshman Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) each scored 17 points, sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) had 16 and freshman Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) added 11 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Raiders. 

J.J. Moore had a game-high 33 points to lead the Pioneers.  

The Purple Raiders started the game out quick as they would open on a 6-0 run.  

Matt Napier hit two free-throws as the Pioneers would answer with an 8-2 run of their own to tie the game at eight. 

Freshman Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) hit a three-pointer with 7:48 left in the first half to give the Raiders their largest lead of the game 11 points at 31-20. 

Jason Humphrey hit two free-throws with 2:03 left in the first half to give the Pioneers their first lead of the game at 40-39. 

Tyler Worstell scored the last basket of the half with 45 seconds remaining, as the Pioneers would take a 44-43 lead into the locker room. 

Senior Justen Little (Galion/Galion) hit a three-pointer with 18:31 to go in the game to give the Raiders their largest lead of the second half three points at 49-46. 

Dillon made a layup with 9:23 left to tie the game at 69, but this was the closest the Raiders would get for the rest of the game. 

The Pioneers took their largest lead of the game 10 points when Scott Kimmey hit a three-pointer with 2:08 remaining to make score 88-78, as Marietta would go on for the 97-90 victory. 

Mount Union's next game will be Saturday when they hit the road to take on Wilmington at 3:00 p.m.
