GAME PREVIEW- Men’s Basketball Returns Home To Host Muskingum Wednesday

Mount Union's men's basketball team (5-10, 3-5 OAC) hosts Muskingum (1-14, 0-8 OAC) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. 

The game will be broadcast on the radio on WRMU 91.1 FM and simulcast online with LIVE STATS right here. 

THE SERIES

Mount Union has lost 10 of the last 11 meetings against Muskingum with the last win coming on December 2, 2006 which was a 71-64 victory in Alliance.

MOUNT UNION

The Purple Raiders are coming off a 108-102 loss in double-overtime at Wilmington Saturday afternoon. 

Sophomores Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers), Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) and freshman Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) all scored career-highs with 31, 25 and 15 points respectively, while freshman Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) grabbed a game and career-high 10 rebounds. 

Dwight Johnson had a shot to win the game for the Quakers at the end of regulation, but his shot as time expired was no good, sending the game into overtime. 

Johnson put the Quakers up two with six seconds left in OT as he scored a layup and made the score 93-91.

Ruffin forced a second overtime, as he scored a layup as time expired to tie the game at 93. 

The Quakers would outscore the Raiders 15-9 in the second OT and would take the victory 108-102.

COACH

Mike Fuline (Kent State '98) is in his second season as head coach at Mount Union and has compiled a 16-25 overall record as head coach of the Purple Raiders.  Prior to becoming head coach of the Raiders, Fuline had a successful coaching career at the high school level that included winning the 2010 OHSAA Division I State Championship at Massillon Jackson.  Prior to coach at Massillon, he was the head coach at Rootstown high school (2003-2005). At Rootstown, his 2003-04 team posted a 16-6 record and won a sectional championship while his 2004-05 team went 20-4, shared the league title and won a district championship. Fuline was named 2004 Ohio's Division III Co-Coach of the Year.

MUSKINGUM

The Fighting Muskies come into Wednesday's game having lost their last game 76-64 at home to Baldwin Wallace and have lost three of their last four with the lone win coming on January 2nd at Franciscan (73-62). 

The Muskies feature the OAC's leading scorer Dave Brown, who averages 17. 3 points-per-game and has scored the most points in the league this season with 259. 

Last season, the Muskies compiled an 8-17 overall record and went 5-13 in the OAC which was tied for ninth place in the conference. .

COACH

Gene Ford (Muskingum'74) is in his sixth season as head coach at Muskingum and has compiled a 54-89 over record as coach of the Fighting Muskies. Over his first four seasons as head coach, Ford has coached two 1,000 point scorers, Brandon Todd and Trevor Scott and led the Muskies to the OAC Tournament Final Four. Prior to becoming head coach of the Muskies, Ford served as assistant basketball coach at Muskingum, where he helped guide the 2005-06 Muskies to their best record (17-9) in 15 years, a third place finish in the rugged OAC, and a trip to the OAC Tournament Final Four. Prior to his arrival at Muskingum, Ford coached for 25 years at Cambridge High School where he compiled a record of 400-183 (.687) and led his teams to 18 sectional titles, eight district crowns and five regional titles, leading to five state tournament appearances. The 1994-95 team finished as the Ohio Division II state runner-up. His teams also won or shared 10 East Central Ohio League championships.
