Men’s Basketball Goes For Fourth Straight Win When It Hosts First Place Capital

Mount Union's men's basketball team (8-10, 6-5 OAC) puts a season-high three-game winning streak on the line when it hosts Capital (12-6, 9-2 OAC) in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday Afternoon at 3:00 pm in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

ADMISSION TO THE GAME WILL BE FREE OF CHARGE. In lieu of admission, donations will be accepted for the Hoops for the Cure Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

THE SERIES

The Purple Raiders have not had much success as of late against the Crusaders as they have won just one out of the past 10 games played between the two schools.

In the matchup earlier this season, Capital defeated Mount Union 61-57 in Bexley, Ohio.

MOUNT UNION

The Purple Raiders are coming off a 83-74 victory over John Carroll.

This was the first time since the 2000-01 season that the Raiders have swept a season series against the Blue Streaks.

Sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) had a team-high 21 points and freshman Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) tied a career-high with four three-pointers.

 COACH

Mike Fuline (Kent State '98) is in his second season as head coach at Mount Union and has compiled a 19-25 overall record as head coach of the Purple Raiders.  Prior to becoming head coach of the Raiders, Fuline had a successful coaching career at the high school level that included winning the 2010 OHSAA Division I State Championship at Massillon Jackson.  Prior to coaching at Massillon, he was the head coach at Rootstown high school (2003-2005). At Rootstown, his 2003-04 team posted a 16-6 record and won a sectional championship while his 2004-05 team went 20-4, shared the league title and won a district championship. Fuline was named 2004 Ohio's Division III Co-Coach of the Year.

Capital

The Blue Streaks come into Saturday's game tied for first place in the OAC with Marietta and defeated Heidelberg 77-62 in their last game.

Last season, the Crusaders finished the season with a 19-10 overall record and went 13-5 in conference play earning the second seed in the OAC tournament and advanced to the finals where they defeated Wilmington 70-66.

They advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament but were defeated by Wooster 92-79.

COACH

Damon Goodwin (Dayton '86) is in his 19th season as head coach at Capital and has compiled a 316-186 record as head coach of the Crusaders.  Goodwin is the winningest coach in Capital men's basketball history has been award OAC coach of the year five times was the 2009 NABC NABC Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year.  Prior to coaching the Crusaders, Goodwin spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Wittenberg University. Upon graduation from Dayton, Goodwin was choosen 147th overall in the NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns.
