Men's Basketball Falls at Home To First Place Capital
ALLIANCE, Ohio - - Freshman Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) came off the bench with a team-high 15 points but it was not enough as Mount Union lost 82-73 to Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
Freshman Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) also came off the bench with 13 while sophomore Steve Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) added 12 points for the Raiders.
Michael Sommer scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Crusaders in the victory.
With the win, Capital stays in first place in the conference at 13-6 overall and 10-2 in the OAC, while Mount Union falls to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
A back and forth first half featured seven lead changes and six ties. Mount Union held a five point lead, 23-18 on a Scelza layup with eight minutes left in the half. Capital would finish the half on a 16-9 surge and lead 34-32 at the break.
Mount Union stayed close trailing by only two, 40-38, early in the second half before the Crusaders went on a decisive 17-4 run finished off by three-straight three-pointers to lead 57-42 with eight minutes left. Capital held off the Raiders the rest of the way for a nine-point victory.
Mount Union is back in action next Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 pm against Baldwin Wallace at The MAAC.
