Men's Basketball Clinches OAC Tournament Bid With Win At Muskingum
NEW CONCORD, Ohio - - Sophomore Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored a game-high 18 points all in the second half as Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Muskingum 80-60 in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday evening in the Muskingum Recreation Center.
Three other Purple Raiders scored in double figures as freshman Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) scored 14, sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) had 11 and junior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/St. John's) added 10.
Logan Kimble had 14 points and grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds to lead the Fighting Muskies.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 10-12 overall and move to 8-7 in the OAC while the Muskies fall to 1-21 overall and 0-15 in the conference.
Muskingum would get off to a fast start as they would start the game on a 15-7 run through the first seven minutes of the opening half.
The Raiders would answer back with a 19-10 run over the next seven minutes to take their first lead of the game at 26-25 when Ruffin would slam home a dunk off a great alley-oop pass from senior Justen Little (Galion/Galion)
Jacubec would hit a three-point shot as the first half expired and the Raiders would take a 34-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Griffin would come storming out of the locker room to begin the second half, as he would score five straight points for the Raiders to take a 39-33 lead with 19:01 remaining.
The Muskies would as close as two points when Christian Keller made a layup with 18:00 to go in the game to make the score 39-37.
The Raiders would put the game away as they would go on a 12-4 run to take their first double-digit lead 51-41 when Ruffin scored a layup with 13:43 remaining in the game and the Raiders would go on for the 80-60 victory.
Mount Union returns to action Saturday when it travels to Ada, Ohio to take on Ohio Northern with tipoff set for 3:00 p.m.
