Men's Basketball Takes Road Victory At Ohio Northern
ADA, Ohio - - Sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) scored a game-high 24 points as Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Ohio Northern 72-57 in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon in the Ohio Northern Sports Center.
With the win, Mount Union has now won three straight games and improves to 11-12 overall and 9-7 in the OAC, while Ohio Northern falls to 11-12 overall and 7-9 in the conference.
Senior Matt Kiger (Williamstown, W. Va./Williamstown) scored 11 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Raiders.
Dominique Royal and Brandon Rushton each had 15 points to lead the Polar Bears.
The Raiders would start the game out quick as they would take a 14-8 lead when Evan Keeslar (Uniontown/Green) scored a layup with 12:13 to go in the first half.
The Polar Bears answered back with an 8-0 run to take a two point lead at 16-14 when Royal scored a layup on the fast break with 9:45 to go in the opening period.
Junior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/St. John's) hit three consecutive free-throws with one second left in the first half which capped a 22-10 run by the Raiders and they would take a 38-26 lead in the locker room.
Sophomore Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) hit a three-pointer with 17:34 to go in the game which capped a 7-0 run to start the second half to make the score 43-26.
Royal hit a jumper with 6:12 to go in the second half to cut the Raiders lead to nine as this would be the closest they would get for the remainder of the game.
Junior Jimmy Darnley (Canton/Glen Oak) hit a layup with 39 seconds to go to match the Raiders biggest lead of 17 points as they would go on for the 72-57 victory.
Mount Union returns home for its next game when it hosts second place Marietta with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
