Men's Basketball Falls To Marietta
ALLIANCE, Ohio - - Sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) and freshman Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) each scored a team-high 15 points but Mount Union's men's basketball team fell 93-81 to Marietta Wednesday evening in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball matchup in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
With the win, Marietta improves to 18-6 overall and 14-3 in the OAC, while Mount Union falls to 11-13 overall and 9-8 in the conference.
Freshman Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) scored 13 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Raiders.
J.J. Martin scored a team high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Pioneers in the victory.
Early in the first half both teams battled back and forth with the game featuring seven lead changes and six ties.
The Pioneers would take a four point lead, 18-14 when J.J. Martin would hit a three-pointer with 12:18 left in the first half.
The Raiders would answer back with a 10-0 run to take a 24-18 lead when freshman Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) nailed a three-pointer with 9:22 left in the opening period.
Jason Humphrey extended the Marietta lead back to three when he scored a layup with 5:45 remaining in the first half to make the score 30-27.
Senior Justen Little (Galion/Galion) hit a jumper with 40 seconds left in the first half which capped a 16-7 run by Mount Union as they would take a 43-37 lead into the locker room.
Dillon would score the first points of the second half as he hit a three-pointer to give the Raiders their largest lead of the game of nine points as 46-37.
Humphrey scored a layup which capped a 13-4 run by the Pioneers to tie the game at 51 with 15:03 remaining in the game.
Tyler Hammond hit two-of-two free-throws to tie the game at 59 with 9:53 left in the game.
The Pioneers would put the game out of reach as they would go on an 18-4 run over the next four minutes to push the lead to 14 at 77-63.
Ruffin would hit a layup to cut the deficit to 10 at 79-69, but this was the closest the Raiders would get for the remainder of the game.
Owens would give the Pioneers their largest lead of 20 points at 93-73 and the Pioneers would go on for the 93-81 victory.
Mount Union will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Wilmington for the regular season finale at 3:00 p.m.
