Ruffin's Career High Lifts Men's Basketball Over Olivet Sunday in the M-Club Finale

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Sophomore Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) set a new career-high of 31 points in Mount Union's men's basketball 104-97 win over Olivet (Mich.) on Sunday, December 29 in the final game of the M-Club Classic at the McPerson Academic and Athletic Complex.

The Purple Raiders pushed their win streak to six games which ties the longest win streak since the 2002-03 season as Mount Union improves to 8-2 overall.

Ruffin led five Raiders with double digits, sophomore Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) scored 14 points, senior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/Toledo St. John's) and junior Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) each scored 12 and sophonore Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) recorded 10 points.

Olivet (2-9) had four players score double figures led by Jordan Union with 26 points. Joining Union were Blake Krum with 19 as Kevin Woodson and T.J. Vondette each with 16.

The first half had two lead changes and six ties as Mount Union jumped out to a three point lead with a layup from Gillespie and a three-pointer from Ruffin. Olivet would come back to tie the game at seven with 18:31 to go in the half before the Comets got to their largest lead of the game with six points with 12:46 remaining, 18-12.

Over the next three minutes Olivet held the slight advantage as they would go up by as many as four points at the 10:56 mark before the Raiders tied the game at 24 off of two Ruffin foul shots with 9:50 remaining in the opening period. Mount Union would extend their lead to 11 points going into the half up 53-42.

Cody Dillon and Gillespie each hit a three-pointer to push the lead to 17 points, 59-42 on the first two possessions of the second half for the Raiders. The Comets erased the double-digit Mount Union lead to come within six points, 71-65 with 12:20 remaining, as they outscored the Raiders 20-12 over a seven minute span. Mount Union grabbed their largest lead of the game with 3:19 remaining from a Jacubec three-pointer to go up by 19 points, 100-81.

Mount Union went on for the seven point victory, 104-97, as the Comets closed the game on a 16-3 run capped by a Robert Shields three-pointer with six second remaining.

Mount Union returns to the hardwood Friday, January 3rd when they take on Westminster (Pa.) at 7:00 p.m. in the MAAC.
