Men's Basketball: First Place Mount Union Travels to John Carroll in Battle of OAC's Top Scoring Teams

Mount Union's men's basketball team travels to John Carroll in a matchup of the two highest scoring teams in the Ohio Athletic Conference Wednesday at 7 pm in University Heights.

The Purple Raiders (13-3, 8-1 OAC) have won 11 of their last 12 games including a 73-50 win at Muskingum last Wednesday and hold a one game lead in first place in the OAC standings.

John Carroll (11-16, 5-5 OAC) started out the season 8-2 but are 3-4 over its last seven games including a 97-80 loss at Ohio Northern this past Sunday.

The Blue Streaks and Raiders are the top two scoring teams in the conference averaging 86.5 and 85.6 points respectively.

The two teams are also the top two rebounding teams in the OAC as John Carroll is at 43.5 rebounds per game and Mount Union is at 40.4 rebounds per game.

Mount Union is the top three point shooting team in the conference with 175 made three's and 39.1 percent from beyond the arc.  The Raiders are second in the nation making 10.9 three-pointers per game.

Both teams are also the conference leaders in defensive field goal percentage as Mount Union allows opponents to convert a conference low 40.5 percent of their shots while John Carroll is right behind at 42.8 percent.

Sophomore Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) is one of three Raiders that average double figures in scoring per game at a team-best 13.5 points per game.

Senior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/Toledo St. John's) is second on the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game and is among conference leaders in assists (4.4 per game) and steals (1.5 per game).

Sophomore Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) averages 12.6 points per game and his 6.4 rebounds per game leads the team while he is second in the OAC with 26 blocked shots.

Four Blue Streaks average double digits in scoring led by David Hendrickson and Jake Hollinger each at 12.9 points per game.

Simon Kucharewicz averages 11.2 points per game and is second in the conference in rebounding at 7.2 boards per game.

EARLIER THIS SEASON

Mount Union rallied from a six-point halftime deficit and ran off with a 113-100 victory over John Carroll behind a career-best 35 point performance from Cody Dillon.  Three other Raiders were in double figures including an 11-point, 10-rebound performance from Jimmy Darnley.  David Linane had 26 points off the bench and Danny Wallack had 24 for John Carroll.

SERIES

This will be the 78th meeting between the two teams with John Carroll holding the a 39-38 lead in the series.  Including the win earlier this season, Mount Union has won the last three meetings.

COACHES

Mike Fuline (Kent State '98) is 37-33 in his third year as head coach at Mount Union.  A year ago, he led the Raiders to their highest win total in seven years and a run to the OAC Tournament title game. Prior to Mount Union, Fuline was a high school coach for eight years at both Rootstown and Massillon Jackson.  In 2010, his Jackson team won the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I State Championship.

Mike Moran (Xavier '73) is 389-205 in his 22nd season as head coach at John Carroll.  Moran has led the Blue Streaks to 10 OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament including a final four run 10 years ago in 2004.  Before coming to John Carroll, he won a pair of Ohio High School Athletic Association state championships as head coach at Villa Anglea St. Joseph High School in Cleveland.
