ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Mount Union's men's basketball team was defeated 82-69 by Augustana College in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 in the Roy J. Carver Center on Friday.
Augustana (25-4) was led by Ben Ryan who poured in a game-high 26 points. Hunter Hill scored 16 points, 14 of those coming from the free throw line.
The Vikings started the first half by scoring the first seven points of the game. The Raiders countered with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to two points. Augustana went back ahead by seven points, 16-9, before Mount Union scored the next five points to trim the lead back to just two.
Mount Union went down by double figures as Augustana went on a 13-5 run to lead by ten points, 29-19, with 2:58 left in the half. Augustana led by as many as 13 and led by a score of 38-27 at the half.
The Raiders started the second half with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to four, 40-36 with 14:41 left in the game. A 10-0 run by the Vikings gave Augustana a 50-36 lead with 11:11 remaining.
Mount Union put together an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to six points on numerous occassions but could get no closer the rest of the way.
The last six point deficit was at the 1:49 mark but Augustana scored the next six points to close the game.
Augustana will advance to play Marietta in the Elite Eight on Saturday at 8:00 pm
Mount Union's season end with a 24-7 record, the second most wins in school history and the program's second NCAA Tournament birth.
