Men's Basketball: #7 Mount Union Defeats #17 Chicago 74-58

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The No. 7 ranked Mount Union men's basketball team finished the North Central Tip-Off Tournament with a 74-58 victory over No. 17 ranked Chicago.

Mount Union (2-2) was led sophomore JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) who had a team high 19 points in the win over Chicago. Senior Jake Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) was the team's second leading scorer with 17.

Chicago (1-1) was led by Jordan Smith who collected 21 points. Alex Voss chipped in with 16 points for the Phoenix.

Both teams came out and played a tightly contested first half as neither team led by more than seven points and exchanged leads six times.

Mount Union had the edge shooting the ball in the first half with a 41.2% from beyond the arc and shot 42.5% from the field opposed to Chicago's 28.6% from three and 26.2% from the field.

Mount Union went into the locker room at halftime with a slight 27-26 lead over Chicago. Jacubec led the Raiders with 10 points at the half.

Mount Union slowly built a lead throughout the second half against Chicago as sophomore Miles Griffin (Massillon/Massillon/Jackson) provided a spark off of the bench and ended up with 15 points.

The Raiders got their largest lead of the game with 5:44 left in the second half after a Kukura layup that put Mount Union up 58-47.

Chicago came back late in the second half to pull within five points of Mount Union but the Purple Raiders were able to hold on for a 74-58 win.

Jacubec and Kukura were named to the North Central Tip-Off All-Tournament Team.
