Men’s Basketball: #19 Mount Union beats Muskingum to Keep First Place in OAC

Alliance, Ohio—No. 19 Mount Union defeated Muskingum in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Wednesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. The Raiders move to 11-3, 7-0 in the OAC while Muskingum falls to 3-11, 0-7 in the OAC.

J.J. Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) and Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) both led the Raiders, scoring 26 points each. Ruffin also earned a double-double grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds as well. Jake Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) was also in double figures scoring 12. 

Muskingum raced out to a 13-4 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) broke the run in the first half with a made three pointer to bring the Raiders back within six. After a pair of made field goals by Ruffin and Moore, Kukura pushed Mount Union to their first lead of the game, 16-15, with 6:57 left in the half. The Raiders would regain the lead off a jumper by Jacubec, and they would hold on to the lead for the rest of the game. Kukura would give Mount Union its biggest lead of the half, 33-20, with a pair of free throws at 00:56 remaining. Kukura finished the first half 13 points.

The Raiders got off to a quick start in the second half with a three by Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) and a layup by Ruffin to extend the lead to 38-23. A dunk by Ruffin would then put Mount Union up by 16 with 9:30 to go in the game. Strong free throw shooting by the Raiders late in the 2nd half would give them their biggest lead of the night as they led by 20. The Raiders shot 33 of 37 from the line.

Mount Union will be back in action on Saturday at No. 7 John Carroll. Tipoff will be at 2:00 PM.
