Game Preview

Mount Union comes into the matchup off a 106-81 loss to #8 Marietta. With the loss, the Purple Raiders fall to 15-6, 11-3 in the conference.

Mount Union was led by JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) with 22 points and Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) with 11 points.

JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) leads Mount Union in scoring, averaging 18.7 points per game. He is currently third in the OAC in scoring. Along with Kukura, three other Raiders average double figures, including Ruffin with 14.5, Jacubec with 13.7, and Scelza with 10.5. Ruffin leads the team in rebounding (8.0). Jacubec leads the OAC in 3PT field goal percentage.

Heidelberg comes into the game off a 77-74 loss to Ohio Northern. The Student Princes are now 11-11, 6-9 in the OAC. Chris Moxley led Heidelberg with 17 points while four other players put up double figures, including Marquice Taylor (14), Jackson Blue (11), Myron Prewitt (10), and DeAvery Collins (10).

Kiere Bennie leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game while Collins averages 10.8. Blue leads the team in rebounding (5.3).

Previous Meeting

The last meeting between these two teams resulted in a 104-80 win for Mount Union.  Mount Union had four players in double figures as Ruffin scored 17,  Kukura had 16, Cody Dillon added 15 and Jake Jacubec finished with 13. Heidelberg got a game-high 20 points from Kiere Bennie.

Heidelberg ran out to an early five point lead, 13-8, in game's first five minutes, the lead then changed hands three more times over the next nine minutes before the Raiders ended the half on a 16-5 surge to take a 47-35 lead at the half.  Dillon had six points during the run and 11 for the period.

Dillon started Mount Union off with a three in the second half and sparked a 23-5 run to open the half as the Raiders went up 70-40 with 14 minutes left to put the game away.

Coaches

Mike Fuline (Kent State '98) is in his fifth season at Mount Union with an overall record of 82-48. Fuline has won an OAC regular season and tournament title and was the 2015 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year leading the Raiders to the NCAA Sweet 16.  Before coming to Alliance, Fuline spent six years as head coach of Massillon Jackson High School and won the 2011 OHSAA Division I Boys State Basketball Championship.

Andy Bucheit (Wittenberg '05) is in his third season at Heidelberg with an overall record of 29-44. He was an assistant at Marietta before going to Tiffin.
