Men’s Basketball: Mount Union hosts #8 John Carroll in OAC Contest

Mount Union men's basketball will face No. 8 John Carroll in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex for an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The University of Mount Union is not only competing against John Carroll tonight on the Basketball Court, but we are also competing with them off the court in a National Recycling Competition called RECYCLEMANIA!

Mount Union and John Carroll are among 350 Schools competing nationwide to be the Recycling Grand Champion, which is the school with the highest recycling rate!"

Game Preview:

Mount Union comes into the matchup off an 83-80 overtime loss to Muskingum. With the loss, The Purple Raiders fell to 15-8, 11-5 in the OAC.

Mount Union was led by Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) with a game-high and new season-high 24 points, while Jarrett Ruffin(Northfield/Nordonia) had 22, Miles Griffin (Massillon/Jackson) scored 16, and Jake Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) finished 11. The Raiders are now 15-8, and 11-5 in the OAC.

JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) leads Mount Union in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game. He is currently third in the OAC in scoring. Along with Kukura, three other Raiders average double figures, including Ruffin with 15.0, Jake Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) with 13.1, and Scelza with 10.6. Ruffin leads the team in rebounding (8.2) and is fourth in the OAC. 

 

John Carroll enters the game off an 86-81 loss to No.4 Marietta.  With the loss, the fall to 21-2, 14-2 in the OAC. Danny Wallack led John Carroll with 20 points, while Antonio Vuyancih added 16 and Simon Kucharewicz finished with 10.

David Linane leads the Blue Streaks in scoring for the season, averaging 15.3 points per game, while Kucharewicz averages 11.0. Kucharewicz also leads the OAC in field goal percentage (63.4).

Previous Meeting 

The last meeting between the Raiders and the Blue Streaks resulted in a 116-93 win for John Carroll. The Purple Raiders were led by Kukura with a game-high 22 points and 7 rebounds, while Mount Union had three other players in double figures as Jacubec scored 15, Scelza  with 14, Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) added 12, and Ruffin scored 10.

 

The Blue Streaks had seven players in double figures and was led by Ryan Farragher with 21 points. Kucharewicz added 17 points of his own, while Doug Caputo added 14 with a game-high 12 rebounds and Will Starks had 12. 

Mount Union scored six of the game's first eight points and led 6-2 in the game's opening two minutes but John Carroll would go on a 20-7 run over the next five minutes capped by back-to-back three's from Danny Wallack and Will Starks to lead 22-13.  The Blue Streaks would stretch that lead to as many as 14 points leading 52-38 at the break.

Mount Union got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

 

Coaches

Mike Fuline (Kent State '98) is in his fifth season at Mount Union with an overall record of 83-51. Fuline has won an OAC regular season and tournament title and was the 2015 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year leading the Raiders to the NCAA Sweet 16.  Before coming to Alliance, Fuline spent six years as head coach of Massillon Jackson High School and won the 2011 OHSAA Division I Boys State Basketball Championship.

Mike Moran (Xavier '73) is in his 24th season at John Carroll with an overall record of 437-219. Moran has won ten OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles, and has made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. He has been name OAC Coach of the Year five times and Great Lakes Coach of the Year twice. Before going to John Carroll in 1992, Moran led Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School to nine district championships, four regional championships, and two state championships.
