Men's Basketball: Mount Union Hosts Wilmington For Senior Day

Mount Union men's basketball will host Wilmington for an Ohio Athletic Conference basketball game at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Game Preview:

Mount Union comes into the matchup off a come from behind 100-94 victory over nationally-ranked No. 8 John Carroll. With the win, The Purple Raiders improve to 16-8, 12-4 in the conference.

Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) scored a game-high 22 points and was one of five Purple Raiders in double figures. Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow) scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half, Jarrett Ruffin(Northfield/Nordonia) added 15, Jake Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) scored 14, and Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) finished with 13 as the other Raiders in double digits.

 

JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) leads Mount Union in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game. The Raiders have four other players averaging double figures as well, including: Ruffin with 15.0 ppg., Jacubec with 13.2 ppg., Scelza with 10.9 ppg., and Dillon with 10.1 ppg.

 

Wilmington enters the contest off a close 80-79 victory over Muskingum. Christian Jones led the Quakers with 22 points, while three other players scored double figures in the effort.

 

Zach McCorkle leads Wilmington in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. Jones also averages double figures with 12.5 point per game.

 

Previous Meeting 

The last meeting between the Raiders and the Quakers resulted in a 82-79 win for Mount Union. Mount Union had three players in double figures as Kukura scored a game-high 26 points,  Jacubec had 17, and Ruffin scored 11. Wilmington got 14 points each from Zach McCorkle and Brandon Smith.

The Quakers jumped out to a four point lead, 15-11, in the first five minutes and pushed that lead to as many as 13 points, 47-34 with 1:40 left in the half.  Mount Union scored four of the last six points of the half to trail, 49-38 at the break.

In the second half, Jacubec hit a three pointer which started a 11-2 run in the first four minutes, which tied the game up at 49. Five minutes later, Mount Union gained its first lead, 67-65, on a layup by Kukura with 10:25 left in the game. The Raiders would lead by as many as eight but Wilmington would rally to get it to with a bucket with 2.1 seconds left before Ruffin hit a free throw for the 82-79 final. 

Coaches

Mike Fuline (Kent State '98) is in his fifth season at Mount Union with an overall record of 84-51. Fuline has won an OAC regular season and tournament title and was the 2015 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year leading the Raiders to the NCAA Sweet 16.  Before coming to Alliance, Fuline spent six years as head coach of Massillon Jackson High School and won the 2011 OHSAA Division I Boys State Basketball Championship.

K.C. Hunt (Ohio State '95) is 123-93 in his ninth season as head coach at Wilmington.  Under Hunt, the Quakers have won a pair of OAC titles and made an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010.  The 2010 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, Hunt had coaching stints at St. Lawrence (N.Y.), Dublin Coffman and Perry High Schools prior to joining the Wilmington staff as an assistant in 2004.
