UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team suffered a 98-66 loss at No. 23 ranked John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference battle Wednesday at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Junior Andrew Francesconi (Tallmadge), senior JJ Kukura (Alliance) and freshman Tre'Maine Gray (Akron/Firestone) all scored 10 points for the Purple Raiders, who are now 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the OAC
Antonio Vuyancih had a game-high 13 to lead five scorers in double figures for John Carroll, which stays alone in first place in the OAC at 15-3 overall and 9-2 in the OAC.
Turnovers and three-point shooting were the story in the first half as Mount Union had seven turnovers while John Carroll made 12 three-pointers which gave the Blue Streaks a 50-33 lead at the break.
Each team opened the game with 5-0 runs inside the first four minutes. The teams would share baskets up until the game was tied at 16 before John Carroll went on a 17-2 run to open up a 15-point lead at 33-18. John Carroll would open up its largest lead of the half at 48-26 with 2:01 remaining but Mount Union would close the half on a 7-2 run for the 50-33 John Carroll lead.
The Blue Streaks opened the second half on an 8-2 run to extend their lead at 58-35. The Raiders answered with a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to 16 with 14:56 remaining but got no closer.
Next up for the Raiders is a home OAC matchup with Wilmington at 3 p.m. in the MAAC.
