BEREA, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team was defeated by Baldwin Wallace 84-60 in an Ohio Athletic Conference quarterfinal matchup Tuesday night at the Ursprung Gymnasium.
The Purple Raiders were led by seniors JJ Kukura (Alliance) and Miles Griffin (Massillon/Jackson) who had 17 and 11 points, respectively. Kukura leaves Mount Union as the third all-time scorer with 1,477 career points.
Baldwin Wallace (18-8) was led by Jay Battle and Cam Kuhn who poured in 29 and 18 points, respectively.
Mount Union opened the first half shooting just 3-for-11 from the floor and saw themselves trailing the Yellow Jackets 18-9 in the first 10 minutes of the game. With the score 25-15 in favor of Baldwin Wallace, the Yellow Jackets upped their lead to 20 at 41-21 off of a 16-6 run with 4:35 remaining in the half. The Raiders finished the half on a short 7-4 to cut the halftime deficit to 16 at 44-28.
The Raiders shot just 10-of-28 (35.7%) from the floor in the half and 2-of-6 (33%) from distance while Baldwin Wallace was 14-of-31 (45.2%) but 8-of-16 (50%) from distance.
Mount Union opened the second half on a short 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 11 but the Yellow Jackets answered with a 9-0 run to get their lead back to 20 at 53-33. With the score 55-35, the Raiders went on a short 6-0 run before another Battle three ended the spurt. That was the closest the Raiders would get in the half as the Jackets continued to bury shots.
The Raiders shot just 21-of-58 (36.2%) and 4-of-13 (30.8%) from distance. Baldwin Wallace shot well throughout the game as they were 29-of-59 (49.2%) while burying 15-of-30 from distance.
The Raiders finish their season with a 13-13 overall record and a 9-9 OAC record.
