ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's basketball team improved to 11-1 on the season after beating Adrian 76-52 on the final day of the Mount Union Holiday Classic Saturday, December 29 at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders won their 11th game in a row and were led by freshman Collen Gurley (Akron/Hoban) who finished with 14 points, junior D'Vontay Friga (Cuyahoga Falls) tallied 12 points while fellow classmate Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) finished with 10 points and five assists.
Adrian (3-8) was led by Jeremy Kalonji who finished with 21 points.
The Raiders missed eight of their first 10 shots which allowed the Bulldogs to get a quick 6-3 lead. Mount Union climbed back to eventually tie the game at 15 on a layup from freshman Mario Caywood (Streetsboro/Benedictine) at the 8:44 mark. The Raiders finished the half with a 22-7 run which included Adrian scoring just three points over the final four minutes of the first half as Mount Union led 37-22 at the break.
Mount Union opened the second half with a dunk from junior John Carroll (Massillon/Tuslaw) which sparked a 7-2 run to push the lead to 44-24 with just over 15 minutes to play. Adrian rallied but got no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
It marked the fifth straight game that the Raiders shot at least 50-percent from the floor as they went 14-of-28 (7-of-14 from three-point range). Mount Union held Adrian to just 34.5-percent (10-of-29) shooting from the floor.
Mount Union returns to Ohio Athletic Conference play Saturday, January 5 at 2 p.m. against Capital in Columbus.
