Men's Basketball: Mount Union Holds Off Otterbein For Road Win

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team held off Otterbein to grab a 66-61 Ohio Athletic Conference win Saturday in Westerville.

Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) and Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) each had 13 points as Mount Union had four players in double figures as the Purple Raiders are now 17-4 overall and 11-3 in the conference.

D'Vontay Friga (Cuyahoga Falls) had 12 and Diallo Niamke (Sagamore Hills / Nordonia) had 11 as other double digit scorers for Mount Union.

Jay Joseph had a game-high 26 points for Otterbein (6-15, 3-11 OAC).

Mount Union used a 15-2 run midway through the first half and a Friga jumper three minutes before halftime would give the Raiders a 36-20 lead. Mount Union would eventually take a 40-31 lead into the lockers at the break.

A Gurley three-pointer with 12:54 remaining gave Mount Union a 49-39 lead but the Cardinals rallied. Otterbein would get to within two points, 51-49, with just under eight minutes remaining before Bower-Malone hit a pair of free throws and a Tommy Stenger (North Canton / Hoover) three-pointer pushed the lead back to seven points, 56-49. Otterbein rallied again to tie the game at 59-59 with just over a minute to play but Mount Union hit 7-of-8 free throws the rest of the way for the win.

The Raiders return home to host nationally ranked Marietta in an OAC game Wednesday at 7 p.m.
