ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Heidelberg in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament 77-66 Tuesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders (21-5) now have a 16-game win streak dating back to last season.
Mount Union was led by senior Andrew Francesconi (Tallmadge) who collected a season-high 21 points. Junior D'Vontay Friga (Cuyahoga Falls) finished with a double-double on the day tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds while freshman Collen Gurley (Akron/Hoban) chipped in with 10 points.
Heidelberg (8-18) was led by Dylan Woods who had 19 points.
The Student Princes jumped out to a 13-6 lead to start the game before the Raiders bounced back to take control of the game at 17-16 off a layup from junior Tanner Slack (New Concord/John Glenn). The Raiders went on an 11-4 run sparked by four consecutive three-point field goals that pushed the Raider advantage to 29-24. Mount Union headed into the locker rooms up 31-27.
Gurley nailed back-to-back three-pointers midway through the second half to push the Raider point margin back to 12 at 48-36. The Student Princes chipped away at the Raider lead throughout the half cutting the deficit to eight with 56 seconds left. Mount Union sank free throws the rest of the way to take the 77-66 victory.
The Raiders advance to the OAC Tournament semifinals and will host John Carroll with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
