UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio— The Mount Union men's basketball team defeated John Carroll 96-79 in its Ohio Athletic Conference opener Wednesday night at Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
The Purple Raiders improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in OAC play while John Carroll drops to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.
Senior Tanner Slack (New Concord / John Glenn) led Mount Union with a career-high 24 points. Senior D'Vontay Friga (Cuyahoga Falls) scored 21 off the bench and Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) scored 17 while adding 10 assists.
The first half saw 16 lead changes in a back and forth period before a Friga three-pointer at the 5:06 mark sparked an 11-4 Mount Union run to end the first half and give the Raiders a 42-36 halftime lead.
John Carroll got as close as five points with 14:40 left in the game but Slack hit his first of four second half three-pointers to put the Raiders back out front, 55-47. The Raiders would eventually extend that lead to as much as 20 points in the game's final minute.
The Raiders return home to host Ohio Northern in an OAC game Saturday Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. in Timken Gymnasium.
