Men's Basketball: Sunshine State Sweep For Raiders

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Union (N.Y.) 78-65 for its sixth straight win Sunday at the Land of Magic Classic at the ICI Center in Daytona Beach.

D'Vontay Friga (Cuyahoga Falls) came off the bench and had 13 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as the Purple Raiders are now 8-2 on the season.

Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) had 18 points and Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) had 17 points as the other double-digit scorers for Mount Union.

Union got 14 points from Mike Concannon and are now 4-3 on the season.

Union hit seven of its first eight shots to run out to a 16-8 lead in the game's opening six minutes. Mount Union answered with an 11-2 run, capped off by a pair of Bower-Malone free throws, to give the Raiders their first lead of the game 19-18 with 9:54 to play in the first half. The rest of the half featured three more lead changes and two more ties as Union did not hit a field goal in the final 2:42 and Mount Union finished the period scoring six of the final eight points to lead 35-31 at the half.

The Dutchmen started the second half with four straight points to tie the game at 35-35 but Mount Union came back again this time with a 10-0 run highlighted by a pair of Gurley three pointers and the Raiders led 51-40 with 12:50 remaining. Union then scored eight straight to close to 51-48 but the Raiders scored 17 of the next 22 points to keep a 68-53 lead at the 4:00 mark. Mount Union hit eight of its final 11 shots to close out the game.  

Mount Union returns to Ohio Athletic Conference play Saturday, Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. at Heidelberg University in Tiffin.
