NEW CONCORD, Ohio- Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Muskingum 105-86 in Ohio Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at Anne C. Steele Center in New Concord, Ohio.
The Purple Raiders improve to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the OAC while the loss drops Muskingum to 7-7 overall and 2-5 in the OAC.
Mount Union was led by sophomore Collen Gurley (Akron / Hoban) with a career-high 34 points. Gurley tied a school record with nine threes in the game.
Senior Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) kept his hot shooting going from the last game scoring 29 points along with seven assists and six rebounds. Senior teammates D'Vontay Friga (Cuyahoga Falls) and John Carroll (Massillon / Tuslaw ) finished with 14 and 11 points respectively.
Muskingum was led by Marcus Dempsey, who is second in the nation in points per game, scoring 45 points.
Mount Union and Muskingum fought early on with neither team leading by more than four until 10:05 left in the half when Mount Union went on a 11-2 run fueled by junior Logan Hill (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) as he started it with a three-pointer and finished it with an ally-op from a pass from Friga to lead 37-27.
Muskingum got within three twice in the half, but Mount Union had a 50-43 lead at halftime with Gurley leading the Raiders in scoring with 11 points in the first half.
The Raiders got the second half going with a 10-2 run with Bower-Malone scoring eight of those to give Mount Union a 60-45 lead. Muskingum came back with a 6-0 run to bring the score to 60-51.
Mount Union led 74-69 with 8:25 left in the second half when they went on a 20-5 run to lead 94-74 with 4:26 left with Gurley scoring 14 of his team high 34 points in the run.
Mount Union finished the night shooting 60.3-percent from the field and 12-22 from the three.
Mount Union will travel to face OAC opponent Otterbein Saturday Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.
