GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Mount Union finished 20th at the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
The Purple Raiders were five shots better on day two posting a team score of 300 after a 305 on day one, but the 605 total left them five shots past the cut line as only the top 15 teams after 36 holes advance to the final two rounds.
Senior Scott Miller (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), who shot an opening round 75, came back with a two-under 70 in the second round to card a two-day total of +1 and get into a playoff for one of five individual spots reserved for non-advancing teams.
Miller was in a four-man playoff and bogeyed the first playoff and was eliminated from the tournament.
Freshman Ben Lehrke (North Ridgeville/Lutheran West) posted a score of 149 (76-73), senior Cory Muller (Akron/Green) had a 153 (77-76), sophomore Jon Lieser (Minerva/Minerva) had a 159 (77-82), while senior Steve Guerrieri (Canton/Massillon Jackson) had a 160 (79-81) as the other Mount Union scores.
The 20th place finish is the second-highest finish ever for a Mount Union team as the 2008 team placed 12th overall.
