ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Mount Union men's golf team finished in third place on a blustery day at the Phipps Invitational in Alliance, Ohio.
Walsh University (299) won the event, which also featured the Purple Raiders and Malone University. Mount Union (323) finished 24 strokes back on the Par-70, 6411-yard Alliance Country Club layout.
Sophomore Nick Popely (Painesville/Riverside) paced the Raiders with a 76 and senior Jon Lieser (Minerva/Minerva) carded a 78. Popely finished in a tie for fifth, while Lieser ended his afternoon in a tie for eighth. Freshman Justin Schoen (Bellevue/Bellevue) shot an 82 to wrap up the tournament in a tie for 15th and last week's Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Dillon Bright (Granville/Granville) carded an 87 (T-24).
Walsh's Jeff Cockerham finished first out of 28 golfers with a 71.
The Phipps Invitational concludes Mount Union's fall season. The season was highlighted by a team victory at the Muskingum Tournament last weekend. Bright won the event. The team will hit the links again in March 2013.
