ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's lacrosse team notched its first win on the season with a 13-8 victory over Thiel (Pa.) Wednesday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (1-1) were led by freshmen duo Carl Sopczyk (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) and Michael Taylor (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) as they each tallied four points in the contest. Sopczyk scored three goals and had one assist while Taylor had three assists and one goal in the victory for the Raiders.
The Tomcats (0-3) were led by junior Carmen Papa who tallied three points with two goals and one assist. Junior Francis Ahia and freshman Sean Loney both tallied two points as they both scored twice for the Tomcats.
Thiel scored first in the game at the 10:10 mark before the Raiders scored three unanswered goals to take the 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Mount Union would shut out the Tomcats as freshman Collin Peters (Portland, Ore./Sunset) tallied four saves, as Raiders took the 6-1 lead into the halftime break.
Mount Union would score the first two goals in the third quarter as freshmen duo Andrew Rosati (Streetsboro/Walsh-Jesuit) and Josh Stephens (North Canton/Green) buried goals in the back of the net for the Raiders. Thiel's Papa would score a goal with 11:17 remaining in the third quarter would cut Mount Union's lead to six, 8-2.
The Raiders would outscore the Tomcats for the remainder of the quarter 4-3 before taking the 12-5 lead going into the fourth and final quarter.
Thiel would outscore Mount Union 3-1 in the fourth quarter before the Raiders went on for the victory 13-8.
Mount Union hosts Centre (Ky.) Saturday, March 9th at 3:00 pm at Mount Union Stadium.
