GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Mount Union men's lacrosse team suffered a 12-6 loss to Thiel College in its season opener Saturday morning at Thiel.
The Purple Raiders fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Tomcats improve to 1-0.
Mount Union was led by senior attackman Chris Daley (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) who recorded one goal and three assists for four total points. Senior attackman Derek Thomas (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored two goals, one of which came in a man-up situation at the end of the third quarter.
Thiel's Jared Saffer led the Tomcats with four goals.
Daley scored the first goal of the game just over three minutes into the first quarter. Thiel responded with seven unanswered goals through the first two quarters of play, leaving Mount Union behind 7-1 at the break.
Freshman Sean O'Loughlin (Hudson/Hudson) found the back of Thiel's goal after being fed by Daley to cut the Tomcats' lead to five in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Thiel responded with back-to-back goals in a span of seven seconds to take a 9-2 lead over the Raiders.
Mount Union followed with four unanswered goals, two of which came from Thomas, and the others coming from O'Loughlin and sophomore Kyle Adams (St. Catharines, Ontario/St. Francis Catholic). Thiel scored three additional goals in the final quarter to seal a 12-6 win over Mount Union.
The Purple Raiders host St. Vincent (Pa.) in a non-conference game Saturday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
