DOVER, Del. – The Mount Union men's lacrosse team sailed to a 4-3 victory over Wesley College Saturday afternoon in Delaware.
Mount Union (2-1) was led by freshmen Seamus McCartin (Centreville, Md. / Queen Anne's County) who tallied two goals and one assist. Additionally, freshmen Jacob Dodd (Ridgley, Md. / North Caroline) had a game-high six groundballs and junior goalie Jake Krone (Stow / Hudson) had 10 saves.
Wesley's (1-2) Josh Wassum led the team with two goals and one assist.
The Wolverine offense struck first as Wassum found the back of the net but the Raiders quickly responded with a goal by sophomore Sean O'Loughlin (Hudson / Hudson). Later in the first quarter, Wesley scored making it a 2-1 lead with 7:12 remaining. The Raider offense closed out the quarter with a goal by Seamus McCartin tying up the game 2-2 going into the second quarter.
The momentum continued into the second quarter for the Purple Raiders as they outscored Wesley 2-0 resulting in a 4-2 halftime lead. Freshmen Evan Eifert (Cincinnati/Moeller) and Seamus McCartin scored for Mount Union in the quarter.
Defense was the story in the third quarter as neither team scored. Contributing on defense for the Raiders were sophomores Cole Abid (Rockville, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton) and Dylan Allen (Centreville, Md. / Queen Anne's County).
Wesley's Chris Smith scored to minimize the deficit to 4-3 with 9:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Raider defense held off the Wolverines for the remaining nine minutes of the quarter.
Mount Union will next face Oberlin College on Saturday March 10 at Mount Union Stadium beginning at 1:00 PM.
