Men's Lacrosse: Raiders Close Out Season With Victory Over Heidelberg

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's lacrosse team closed out their 2018 campaign with a 12-4 victory over Heidelberg Saturday afternoon at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders finish with a record of 6-9 and 3-5 in the OAC while Heidelberg drops to 7-9 and 1-7 in the OAC.

Mount Union was led by freshman Seamus McCartin (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's Cty.) who recorded four goals and three assists for a game-high seven points. Additionally, freshman Chris Motter (Hudson) won 14 of 14 faceoff opportunities and junior goalie Jake Krone (Stow/Hudson) made 12 saves in the win.

The Student Princes were led by Patrick McCarthy who scored two goals.

Mount Union seniors Brent Greenberg (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), Nicholas Silva (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) and Christian Schmidt (Stow) were honored prior to the start of the game.  

Heidelberg's Patrick McCarthy recorded the first goal of the game at the 10:05 mark of the opening quarter giving the Student Princes a 1-0 advantage. With 2:52 remaining in the quarter, Greenberg tied the game with an unassisted goal. The Raiders then took their first lead of the game at 2-1 as McCartin found the back of the net on an assist from Grant Elffers (Hudson) with just 29 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Mount Union's momentum continued into the second quarter as Paul Gill (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's Cty.) tallied an unassisted goal giving the Raiders a 3-1 cushion at the 13:22 mark. Later in the quarter, Heidelberg trimmed the lead to one but Mount Union quickly answered back as McCartin and Jacob Dodd (Ridgley, Md./North Caroline) netted goals just 14 seconds apart, making it 5-2 at the 3:29 mark. With two seconds remaining, the Raiders extended their lead to 6-2 as Greenberg scored his second goal of the contest.

In the second half, Mount Union outscored Heidelberg 6-2 as five different players scored goals for the Raiders in the 12-4 Senior Day victory.
