PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Mount Union men's lacrosse team saw Chatham score a goal with seven seconds left to beat the Purple Raiders 13-12 Wednesday at Rooney Field at Duquesne University.
Alek Kungle (Hartville / Lake) had four goals, Logan Gebhart (McDonald, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) had four goals and an assist while Matt Bisono (Deer Park, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists to lead the Raiders, that are now 1-1 on the season.
Nicholas Guaglione had three goals and three assists and Jake Brown scored the game-winner for Chatham (1-0).
Chatham got the board first with a goal at the 10:08 mark of the first quarter and the Cougars made it 2-0 with a goal with 6:50 left in the period. Twenty-three seconds later, Logan Addonizio (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) scored off a pass from Bisono to allow the Raiders to cut the deficit in half.
Mount Union tied the game with a goal from Logan Gebhart just under three minutes into the second quarter. Each teams traded two goals over a span of 2:09 to tie the game at 4-4 as Bisono and Kungle had the goals for the Raiders. Addonizio tallied his second of the day as Mount Union retook the lead then Gebhart got his second score and the Raiders pushed the lead to 6-4 with 7:55 remaining before halftime. Chatham got back within a goal with 5:48 left in the quarter. Kungle scored 16 seconds left to give Mount Union a 7-5 lead at the half.
Sean O'Loughlin (Hudson) gave the Raiders an 8-5 lead with 10:39 left in third quarter. Chatham scored three unanswered goals the rest of the quarter to tie the game at 8-8. Kungle then got his third goal of the day with 30 seconds left as Mount Union led 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
Chatham tied it up 1:20 into the final quarter and less than two minutes later goals from Bisono and Kungle put the Raiders back out in front, 11-9. Chatham rallied again with three goals and took a 12-11 lead with 3:09 to play. Gebhart tied the game at 12-12 with his fourth goal with 1:29 to go. Jake Brown scored the game-winner with seven seconds to go.
Chris Motter (Hudson) was 23-of-28 on faceoffs for the Raiders.
Mount Union is back in action and back in Western Pennsylvania Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Vincent in Latrobe.
