Men's Soccer Receives More Postseason Awards

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's soccer team received a number of honors after its most successful season since 2003.

With a 3.20 team grade point average, the Purple Raiders were awarded with a National Soccer coaches Association of America Team Academic Award. Only squads with GPAs above 3.0 are awarded.

A number of Mount Union individuals also received accolades from the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association.

Freshman forward Thomas Beck (Poland/Cardinal Mooney) was named to the All-Ohio Second Team while sophomore forward Joey Merlo (Niles/Cardinal Mooney) was honored as an All-Ohio Third Team selection.

Junior defender Anthony Grenga (Canfield/Boardman) was mentioned to the Academic All-Ohio Team.

Team members also voted on their annual team awards. Beck was named the squad's Most Valuable Player while Grenga was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year.

Chris Felker (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) was the Most Improved Player, Erik Leib (Barberton/Barberton) received the Varsity Coaches Award and Paul Batt (Newport News, Va./Heritage) was given the JV Coaches Award.
