Mount Union's men's soccer team travels to Franklin (Ind.) for the Daniel Schutez Community Classic. The Raiders kick off the tournament against host, Franklin (Ind.) Saturday at 6:00 p.m. then close out the tournament against Transylvania (Ky.) Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
SCOUTING MOUNT UNION
The Purple Raiders (0-1) are coming off a 4-0 loss at Oberlin last Saturday. The Raiders took 13 shots but were unable to capitalize against the Yeomen defense. In goal for Mount Union is sophomore Dylan Lias (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls) who had four saves against Oberlin and had 74 saves in 2013.
Coach Nick Stirrett
Nick Stirrett enters his second season as head men's soccer coach at Mount Union.
In his first season, Stirrett led the Raiders to their highest win total in 10 seasons, a third place finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference and an appearance in the OAC Tournament semifinals. Stirrett came to Mount Union after spending the last seasons at Northern Illinois University as an assistant coach.
Franklin (Ind.) (1-1) is coming off a 1-0 win against #23 nationally ranked DePauw this past Wednesday. Franklin (Ind.) returns their leading scorer of the 2013 season in sophomore, Antonio Gioe who scored the winning goal against DePauw. In the net for the Grizzlies is junior Cody Chapman who made seven saves against DePauw Wednesday and is looking to replace graduate Lucas Hill. It is the first meeting between the Raiders and the Grizzlies.
Coach Shaun Mahoney
Shaun Mahoney enters his ninth season at Franklin (Ind.) guiding the program to its most successful season ever in the fall season of 2010. Franklin posted a 4-11-2 overall record in the 2013 season.
Transylvania (Ky.) (1-1) is coming off a 2-0 loss against Berry (Ga.) in the Transylvania University Classic last Sunday. The Pioneers are looking to replace their top three leading scorers in 2013. In goal for the Pioneers is senior keeper Taylor Nossokoff who has four saves on the year. It is the first ever meeting between the Pioneers and the Raiders.
Coach Matt Vogel
Matt Vogel is in his first season as head coach of the Transylvania men's soccer program.
Vogel is a 2008 Transylvania graduate and was a two-time All-American soccer player.
Following Sunday's match the Purple Raiders remain on the road as they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to take on St. Vincent Wednesday, September 10 at 4:00 p.m.
