Men’s Soccer: Raiders Soar Past Redhawks

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Mount Union's men's soccer team defeated La Roche (Pa.) in non-conference action 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Raiders peppered the Redhawks goaltender early in the first half. A penalty kick from senior Jesse Tinney (Heidelberg, Pa./Chartiers Valley) was saved by the La Roche goalkeeper to keep the game even at zero. Tinney later tallied a goal in the 26th minute to get the Raiders in the scoring column. Four minutes later, senior Scott Welker (Solon/Solon) collected his first goal on the season to double the Raider lead. Mount Union controlled a 2-0 score heading into the intermission break.

The second half continued to go in favor of Mount Union as the Raiders scored off a penalty kick from junior Jon Schroeder (Parma/Normandy) that widened the lead to 3-0. A minute later, senior Jesse Tinney (Heidelberg, Pa./Chartiers Valley) recorded his second goal of the match to extend Mount Union's advantage to 4-0. A final goal from freshman Xavier Pinaya (Monclova/Anthony Wayne) gave Mount Union the 5-0 victory.

Junior Zach Hlas (Media/Medina) tallied his second shutout of the season making only two saves in the match. The Raiders offense outshot the Redhawks 33-2. The match marked the first time since 2014 Mount Union scored five goals in one game. 

Mount Union travels to New Wilmington, Pa. to face Westminster (Pa.) on Saturday, September 8 with kickoff starting at 1 p.m.
