UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – No. 13 ranked Mount Union saw a pair of streaks come to an end with a 2-1 double overtime loss at John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference match Wednesday night at Don Shula Stadium.
It was the first loss of the season for the Purple Raiders that ended an eight-match win streak and left them at 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the OAC while John Carroll moves to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the OAC.
The other streak that ended for the Purple Raiders was keeping the opponents off the scoreboard for 879 minutes, 58 seconds dating back to last season as John Carroll scored two unanswered with scores in the 67th and 101st minute.
Both teams had scoring chances in the game's opening 25 minutes, including great opportunities off free kicks before senior Nikolas Newhart (Mentor / Lake Catholic) knocked all ball through the defense from 25 yards out to give the Raiders a 1-0 halftime lead.
Jared Ianiro finished a ball from eight yards out on a pass in the 67th minute to send the game to extra time and Mickey Burrington netted the game-winner when the streaks got a run on their first possession of double overtime for the game-winner.
Mount Union stays on the road next playing Saturday at 3 p.m. at Wilmington.
