ALLAINCE, Ohio-- Mount Union got a pair of goals in the second half to beat Heidelberg 2-1 and picked up three big points in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings Saturday afternoon at Mount Union Stadium.
Senior Jon Schroeder (Parma / Normandy) and junior Austin Overy (Perrysburg) each scored goals in span of just over two minutes early in the second half to break a scoreless tie and give the Purple Raiders the win.
The win moves Mount Union to 9-2-4 overall and 3-1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The 12 points puts them alone in fifth place with a week left in the regular season. The OAC's top six teams after next weekend advance to the conference tournament.
Heidelberg which tried to rally with a goal in the 59th minute falls to 3-11-1 overall and 1-6 in the OAC.
After a scoreless first half, Schroeder got a loose ball in the box and scored in the 47th minute to put the Raiders up 1-0. Just 2:05 later, Overy headed in a Schroeder corner kick to give Mount Union a 2-0 lead.
Bryce Zeleznik got the Berg on the board in the 59th minute but Mount Union's "Purple Wall" on defense finished out the game to preserve the win.
Mount Union finishes the regular season on the road with matches Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at Baldwin Wallace and Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at Ohio Northern.
