BEXLEY, Ohio— No. 5 seed Mount Union tied No. 4 seed Capital 2-2 but the Purple Raiders advanced on penalty kicks 5-4 in the first round of OAC Tournament Tuesday at Bernlohr Stadium.

The Purple Raiders (10-3-5) advance to the semifinals for a second straight season Thursday at a site and time to be announced.

Capital (8-5-5) struck first with a goal by Nick Scharfenberger in the ninth minute assisted by Mujahid Abdel-Ghan.

Junior Colton Priester (Painesville / Riverside) equalized the game for the Raiders with a goal in the 14th minute off an assist from senior Jon Schroeder (Parma / Normandy).

The second half played just like the first half with a Capital goal first in the 75th by Sam Spirk assisted by Greg Knox and then Mount Union got the tying goal from Schroeder on an assist by senior Daniel Chung (Stow / CVCA) in the 79th minute.

The first and second overtimes brought no goals which took us to penalty kicks.

Mount Union senior Brian Belz (North Royalton) missed the first penalty kick while Capital converted. Sophomore Xavier Pinaya (Monclova / Anthony Wayne) put the ball in the back of the net for the Raiders while Capital also did the same.

Sophomore Rylan Wikle (Olmstead Falls), Schroeder, and senior Josh Lewis (Elyria) all chipped the ball into the top right of the net for converted goals while Capital would fail on try number three but then succeed on tries four and five which tied the scoring at four a piece.

Chung chose to put the ball in the top left corner and the ball flew past the goalie. Senior goalkeeper Zach Hlas (Medina) then had to make a stop and the Capital shot went middle but over the cross bar sending the Raiders to the semifinals.

Mount Union outshot Capital 16-8 in the game while having fewer fouls as well with it being 16-11.
