Women's Swimming & Diving Teams Rout Baldwin-Wallace in OAC Dual
The Raiders wasted no time Friday night, taking control of the meet right from the start. The 200-yard relay teams took first and second in the opening event, with the team of Elizabeth Juran(Independence/Independence), Allison Davila(Middleburg Hts./Midpark), Katy Alkire(Akron/Firestone), and Sarah Noble(Copley/Copley) getting the win.
Mount Union feed off that win to propel themselves to sweep six events on the night. The 1000-yard freestyle was the first sweep, with Kayla Aldan(Boardman/Boardman) leading the Purple Raiders with a time of 11:57.98. Then Katy Alkire added a victory in the 200-yard freestyle(2.03.22), with the Raiders also taking second and third again.
But Friday night would be all about the team effort as everyone contributed to the team's success. Seven different swimmers brought home event wins. Freshman Victoria Ljubi(Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had a strong showing, earning the victory in the 200-yard IM.
The biggest surprise of the night for the Raiders had to be Kamiren Veisz (Youngstown/Boardman). Veisz struggled a bit in the Raiders last home meet and wasn't about to let that happen again. “I wasn't seeing the times that I wanted, so I've been working extra hard this week,” stated Veisz. That work paid off as Veisz took the 50-yard freestyle with a great time of 26.49. But the win was not the surprise, Veisz swam in the 500-yard freestyle for the first time all season, and won(5:48.49). “I was surprised to win my first time swimming it. I felt defeated and disappointed after last week and really wanted to come out and give my all, especially against a conference opponent, you have to keep pushing yourself. We felt like we let one get away at John Carroll, and we didn't want to let another conference meet slip. We trained really hard all week and I think it showed tonight,” commented Veisz.
Coach Eric Mojock agreed, “They have been working so hard, and we are starting to see the results. This is a strong meet for us to build on going forward.”
The Raiders, winners in 3 of their last 4, will try to that momentum with them as they travel to the Wooster Invitational, December 3-5.
