Men's Swimming And Diving Win Third Straight Meet

LATROBE, Pa—Mount Union's men's swimming and diving team defeated Saint Vincent 111-92 Friday night (Nov.16) at Saint Vincent.

With the win, Mount Union improves its record to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while St. Vincent falls to 2-2 on the season. 

Senior Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor) took first place in two individual events; the 1650 yard freestyle (17:30.23) and swam the anchor leg in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:29.36) which included: sophomore Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep), senior Mike Greisl (South Euclid/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and freshman Logan Rogers (Hartville/Archbishop Hoban). 

Birnbrich swam in two other events; the 200 yard backstroke (2:03.93) and swam leadoff in the 200 yard medley relay (1:42.62) that placed second which also included: sophomore Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles), junior Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) and freshman Matt Campbell (Louisville/Louisville). 

Freshman Gavin Rundell (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon) finished second in both the 200 (1:48.80) and 500 yard freestyle (5:05.80) and swam the third leg of the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.60) that placed third, which also included: junior Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia), Campbell and sophomore Joe Simpson (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit). 

Freshman Andrew Oktavec (Brunswick/Brunswick) placed third in the longest event of the night, the 1650 yard freestyle (18:18.54). 

Greisl and Zappa finished second (22.90) and third (23.41 ) respectively in the 50 yard freestyle, while freshmen Michael Branch (Las Vegas, Nev/Palo Verde) finished second (4:37.34 ) and Marcus Zappa (Amherst/Amherst Steele) finished third (4:40.04) in the 400 IM.  

Simpson and senior Ben Davies (Willoughby/Willoughby South) placed second (2:06.78) and third (2:09.32) in the 200 yard butterfly.

Junior Zach Melvin (Woodmere/Orange) placed third in the 200 yard backstroke (2:12.07) and swam leadoff in the 200 yard medley relay (1:47.61) that placed third which included: freshmen Seth Evans (Birdsboro, Pa/Daniel Boone), John Sopko (Kent/Kent Theodore Roosevelt) and Davies. 

Mount Union travels to Delaware, Ohio tomorrow (Nov.17) to compete in the Corbiere-Merion Invite.
