Men’s Swimming And Diving Returns Home To Face Ohio Wesleyan Friday

Mount Union's men's swimming and diving team returns to the Hammond Natatorium to face Ohio Wesleyan in a non-conference swim meet Friday (Dec. 7) at 6:00 p.m., and travels to Berea, Ohio to swim Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference meet Saturday at 1:00 p.m. 

Mount Union stands 4-1 on the season, and is coming off placing eighth with 538 points in the three day Wooster Invitational last weekend (Nov. 28-Dec. 1).

Senior Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor) finished second in the 1650 free (16:33.09), and in doing so, broke the school record. The previous record of 16:34.37 was held by Joe Bromley and was set in 1997.

Brocious swam three individual events, placing eighth in the 500 freestyle (4:51.65) and ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:45.26). He also swam four relays, the 800 freestyle relay (7:11.07) that placed fifth, the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.70) which placed eighth, the 200 medley relay (1:37.90) that placed 10th, and the 400 medley relay (3:37.83) that placed 12th. 

The 800 freestyle relay included: freshmen Gavin Rundell (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon), Michael Branch (Las Vegas, Nev/Palo Verde) and senior Mike Greisl (South Euclid/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), the 400 freestyle relay included: Rundell, junior Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) and Greisl. The 200 medley relay included: sophomore Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles), Zappa, and Greisl, and the 400 medley relay included: Rundell, Ruhe, and Greisl. 

Rundell took 12th in the 200 free (1:46.75), 13th in the 200 fly (2:01.21) and 21st in the 500 free (4:59.26). Rundell was also part of the 200 free relay that placed 15th and had teammates: freshmen Matt Campbell (Louisville/Louisville), Logan Rogers (Hartville/Archbishop Hoban) and sophomore Joe Simpson (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit). 

Michael Branch placed 21st in the 1650 free (17:55.91), 22nd in the 400 IM (4:33.81) and was part of the 400 free relay (3:21.91) that took 15th and had teammates: Logan Rogers, Matt Campbell, and junior Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia). 

Greisl placed 18th in the 200 free (1:47.20), 20th in the 100 free (48.54) and swam in the 200 free relay (1:27.71) that placed 7th and had swimmers: sophomore Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep), Mike Zappa, and Austin Moreland. 

Zappa placed 17th in the 100 fly (52.70), 18th in the 100 free (48.32) and 23rd in the 50 free (22.27). 

Brian Ruhe placed 24th in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.35) while teammate Logan Rogers swam in the 400 medley relay (3:46.01) that placed 16th and had swimmers: Hayden Birnbrich, Joe Simpson, and junior Zach Melvin (Woodmere/Orange). 

Birnbrich placed 16th in the 100 backstroke (55.47), 19th in the 50 freestyle (22.01), and swam in the 200 medley relay that placed 15th and had swimmers: Simpson, Melvin, and Moreland. 

Moreland swam in the 800 free relay (7:44.92) that placed 16th and had swimmers:  freshman Nikolas Barkley (Phoenix, Ariz/Desert Vista), Andrew Oktavec (Brunswick/Brunswick) and Joe Simpson. 

Simpson placed 20th in the 200 fly (2:03.61) and 22nd in the 100 fly (53.42), while teammate Zach Melvin placed 21st in the 200 breast (2:21.45) and 23rd in the 100 breast (1:03.37).  

Sophomore Harrison Falconer (Canton/Canton Central Catholic) placed ninth in the one meter diving competition with 189.65 points. 

Ohio Wesleyan has a record of 2-1 on the season, and is coming off of a first place finish in the Oberlin Invitational.  The Battling Bishops and the Raiders competed against each other earlier this season in the Corbiere-Merion Invitational, where the Bishops placed 2nd with 697 points and the Raiders placed third with 606. 

Baldwin Wallace has a record of 0-6, and is coming off of competing in the Blue Devil Invitational where they placed fifth.
