MEET PREVIEW- Men's Swimming And Diving Hosts No. 20 Ohio Northern Saturday
Mount Union's men's swimming and diving team returns home to host Ohio Athletic Conference opponent no. 20 Ohio Northern Saturday in Hammond Natatorium at 1:00 p.m.
The Purple Raiders swimming and diving team (6-2, 3-0) is coming off their second loss of the year in dual meets, when they were defeated by Florida Tech (138-67) in their last meet.
Ohio Northern (6-0, 3-0 OAC) comes into Saturday's meet having defeated Defiance (242-7) and Findlay (207.5-66.5) in their last two meets.
The Polar Bears finished in first place last season at the OAC championships, and placed first the last eight years. Last season, the Ohio Northern's coaching staff was awarded Men's OAC Coaching Staff of the Year, Michael Schultz won Swimmer of the Year, and Nick Meyer was awarded Diver of the Year.
Junior Zach Melvin (Woodmere/Orange) swam two events on the afternoon (one individual and one relay) finishing fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.55) and swam backstroke in the 200 yard medley relay (1:45.03) that finished in third place and was comprised of junior Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia) and sophomores Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles) and Joe Simpson (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit).
Moreland took fifth place in the 50 yard freestyle (24.45), seventh in the 100 free (54.31) and swam the anchor leg in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:34.66) that finished in fourth place and was comprised of Simpson and freshmen Matt Campbell (Louisville/Louisville) and Logan Rogers (Hartville/Archbishop Hoban).
Ruhe took fifth place in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.84) and Simpson placed second in the 100 yard butterfly (54.63).
Campbell took sixth place in the 100 yard freestyle (54.16) and swam freestyle in the 200 yard medley relay (1:48.73) that finished in fourth and was comprised of senior Ben Davies (Willoughby/Willoughby South) who swam backstroke, sophomore Adam Figliuzzi (Bay Village/Bay) who swam breaststroke and freshman Nikolas Barkley (Phoenix, Ariz/Desert Vista) who swam butterfly.
Rogers finished second in the 50 yard freestyle (23.31) and sixth in the 100 yard butterfly (1:01.14).
Davies finished the 200 yard IM (2:10.31) in fourth place and took fifth in the 100 yard backstroke (59.80).
Figliuzzi finished the 200 yard IM (2:28.59) in seventh place and Barkley took fourth in the 100 yard butterfly (58.78) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:14.72).
Freshman Michael Branch (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) swam three events on the afternoon, finishing third in the 200 yard IM (2:08.18), fifth in the 500 yard free (5:08.33) and swam backstroke in the 200 yard medley relay (1:53.40) that finished in sixth place and was comprised of sophomore Harrison Falconer (Canton/Canton Central Catholic) who swam freestyle and freshmen Seth Evans (Birdsboro, Pa/Daniel Boone) who swam breaststroke and John Sopko (Kent/Kent Theodore Roosevelt) who swam butterfly.
Falconer took sixth place in the 50 yard freestyle (25.15) and Evans took seventh in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:10.31).
Evans finished the 100 yard backstroke in eighth place and swam the anchor leg in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:44.10) that finished in sixth and was comprised of freshmen Nathan Levengood (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia) who swam leadoff, Jordan Fitch (Canton/Jackson) who swam the second leg and Nathan Lorah (East Liverpool/Beaver Local) who swam the third leg.
Levengood placed fifth in the 100 yard butterfly (59.64), Fitch took eighth in the 500 free (5:51.19) and Lorah finished eighth in the 200 free (2:07.67).
Senior Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor) finished in second place in both the 100 back (55.60) and the 1000 free (10:12.66).
Brocious also swam leadoff in the 200 free relay (1:30.56) that finished in first place and was comprised of senior Mike Greisl (South Euclid/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) who swam the anchor leg, sophomore Hayden Birnbirch (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep) and freshman Gavin Rundell (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon).
Greisl finished fourth in the 100 yard freestyle (50.39) and fifth in the 200 yard freestyle (1:52.49).
Birnbrich won the 50 free with a time of 22.62 and took second in the 100 free (49.98).
Rundell placed third in the 200 free (1:50.31) and fourth in the 500 free (5:08.22).
Freshman Andrew Oktavec (Brunswick/Brunswick) finished fourth in his only event in the meet, the 1000 yard freestyle (10:59.70).
Sophomore Ryan Kmet (North Royalton/North Royalton) finished sixth in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:23.97) and seventh in the 100 yard backstroke (1:06.32).
Senior Ian Perry (Perry/Perry) took sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.88) and finished seventh in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:47.21).
Freshman Marcus Zappa (Amherst/Amherst Steele) took sixth in the 500 yard freestyle (5:15.97) and seventh in the 200 yard freestyle (1:57.49).
