MEET PREVIEW- Men's Swimming And Diving Competes In Two Meets This Weekend
Mount Union men's swimming and diving team returns home to host Wooster Friday evening and travels to Wilmington on Saturday.
The Purple Raiders swimming and diving team (7-2) is coming off a tough stretch as they have lost their last two meets against Florida Tech (Lost 138-67) and to Ohio Northern in their last meet (150-91).
Wooster comes into Friday's meet with a 3-3 record and defeated Ohio Wesleyan 144-140 in its last meet.
Wilmington comes into Saturday meet with a 6-2 record and is currently on a two meet win streak with victories at Defiance (Won 160-34) and at John Carroll (Won 102-101).
Senior Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor) finished the two longest events of the meet in first place, the 500 (5:00.61) and 1000 (10:24.93) yard freestyles.
Brocious also swam backstroke in the 400 yard medley relay (3:42.59) that finished in second place and was comprised of sophomores Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles) who swam breaststroke, Joe Simpson (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit) who swam butterfly and freshman Logan Rogers (Hartville/Archbishop Hoban) who swam freestyle.
Ruhe finished the 100 yard breaststroke in fourth place with a time of 1:06.07.
Simpson took third in the 100 yard butterfly (54.47) and swam the third leg in the 200 yard freestyle relay that finished in fourth place and was comprised of junior Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia) who swam leadoff , freshman Matt Campbell (Louisville/Louisville) who swam second and Rogers who swam anchor.
Rogers took fourth place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.72.
Moreland placed sixth in both of his freestyle events, the 50 (23.69) and the 100 (55.85) freestyle.
Campbell swam in an exhibition heat of the 100 yard freestyle (53.36) and swam freestyle in the 400 yard medley relay (3:57.14) that finished in fifth place and was comprised of senior Ben Davies (Willoughby/Willoughby South) who swam backstroke and freshmen Seth Evans (Birdsboro, Pa/Daniel Boone) who swam breaststroke and Nikolas Barkley (Phoenix, Ariz. /Desert Vista) who swam butterfly.
Davies finished the 200 IM (2:10.39) in third place and took sixth in the 100 back (1:00.22).
Evans placed sixth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:09.37) and swam in an exhibition heat of the 200 yard freestyle (2:29.39).
Barkley finished the 100 yard butterfly in fifth place with a time of 59.59.
Sophomore Harrison Falconer (Canton/Canton Central Catholic) finished both one meter diving events in fourth place with scores of 112.30 and 81.55 and swam backstroke in the 400 yard medley relay (4:13.51) that finished in sixth place and was comprised of sophomore Adam Figliuzzi (Bay Village/Bay) who swam breaststroke and freshmen Nathan Lorah (East Liverpool/Beaver Local) who swam butterfly and John Sopko (Kent/Kent Theodore Roosevelt) who swam freestyle.
Figliuzzi swam exhibition heats in both the 100 and 200 freestyle and finished with times of 1:10.29 and 2:25.46 respectively.
Sopko swam in an exhibition heat of the 100 yard freestyle (1:17.68) and swam the third leg in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:33.00) that finished in fifth place and was comprised of senior Ian Perry (Perry/Perry) who swam the second leg, and freshmen Marcus Zappa (Amherst/Amherst Steele) who swam leadoff and Nathan Levengood (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia) who swam the anchor leg.
Perry took third place in both of the one meter diving events with scores of 145.00 and 104.15.
Marcus Zappa finished the 200 yard freestyle (1:54.47) in fourth place and swam an exhibition head in the 100 free (53.18).
Freshman Michael Branch (Las Vegas, Nev/Palo Verde) finished the 200 IM (2:08.08) in second place and took fifth in both the 500 and the 1000 yard freestyles with times of 5:16.86 and 10:36.52 respectively.
Freshman Andrew Oktavec (Brunswick/Brunswick) finished the 1000 yard freestyle in sixth place with a time of 11:13.82.
Freshman Gavin Rundell (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon) took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:49.26), second in the 500 freestyle (5:02.19) and swam the second leg in the 200 free relay (1:31.50) that finished in second place and was comprised of senior Mike Greisl (South Euclid/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) who swam the anchor leg, junior Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) who swam the third leg and sophomore Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep) who led off.
Greisl finished the 100 free (49.73) in second place and took third in the 200 free (1:50.12).
Mike Zappa took second in the 100 butterfly (53.26) and third in the 50 free (22.38).
Birnbrich finished the 50 free (22.31) in second place and took third in the 100 back (57.01).
Junior Zach Melvin (Woodmere/Orange) took fifth in both the 100 backstroke (59.78) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.84) and finished the 200 IM (2:14.17) in sixth place.
Sophomore Ryan Kmet (North Royalton/North Royalton) swam in an exhibition heat of the 100 free and finished with a time of 1:05.87.
Freshman Jordan Fitch (Canton/Jackson) swam in exhibition heats of the 100 and 200 yard freestyles and finished with times of 1:17.98 and 2:10.21 respectively.
