Men's Swimming And Diving Defeats Wilmington
WILMINGTON, Ohio - - Mount Union's men's Swimming and Diving won 113-86 on the road over Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference meet Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Mount Union improves to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the OAC, while Wilmington falls to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
The Purple raiders claimed the top three spots in the 100 meter butterfly and the 200 meter freestyle.
Sophomore Joe Simpson (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit) finished first in the 100 meter freestyle (1:01.65), freshman Nikolas Barkley (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) took second (1:05.21) and freshman Nathan Levengood (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia) took third (1:08.75).
Sophomore Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep) finished first (2:10.41) in the 200 meter freestyle, freshmen Marcus Zappa (Amherst/Amherst Steele) finished second (2:11.00) and freshman Matt Campbell (Louisville/Louisville) took third (2:15.34).
Junior Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) finished the 100 meter freestyle in first place with a time of 56.61.
The Raiders claimed the top two sports in the 100 meter backstroke, as Senior Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor) took first (1:02.21) and senior Ben Davies (Willoughby/Willoughby South) finished second (1:08.12).
Davies also took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:24.58 and freshman Gavin Rundell (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon) finished first in the 400 free (4:26.85).
The 200 meter medley relay finished in first place (1:53.09) and was comprised of Brocious who swam backstroke, sophomore Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles) who swam breaststroke, Mike Zappa who swam butterfly, and Birnbrich who swam freestyle.
Mount Union's next meet will be Saturday when they host Penn State-Behrend at 1:00 p.m. in the Hammond Natatorium.
