Men’s Swimming And Diving travels to Westminster For Last Meet Of Regular Season
Mount Union's men's swimming and diving team (9-4) travels to New Wilmington, Pa to face Westminster for its last regular season meet Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Mount Union is coming off a 131-106 victory over Penn State-Behrend last Friday.
Last Friday's meet was senior night where the four Purple Raiders men's swimming and diving seniors were honored, Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor), Ben Davies (Willoughby/Willoughby South), Mike Greisl (South Euclid/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Ian Perry (Perry/Perry)
Westminster enters Sunday's meet with an 8-4 record and is currently on a two meet winning streak with victories over Saint Vincent (131-96) and at Grove City (160-134) in their last meet.
The Raiders finished first in five individual events and one relay.
Brocious took first place honors in the two longest events in the meet, the 500 (4:54.38) and the 1650 (17:19.66) yard freestyles.
Davies finished fourth in the 200 backstroke and swam butterfly in the 400 yard medley relay (3:56.74) that finished in third place and was comprised of freshmen Michael Branch (Las Vegas, Nev/Palo Verde) who swam backstroke, Seth Evans (Birdsboro, Pa/Daniel Boone) who swam breaststroke and junior Zach Melvin (Woodmere/Orange) who swam freestyle.
Greisl took first place honors in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.30 and finished second in the 100 free with a time of 48.68 seconds.
Perry took third in the first one meter diving event of the meet with a score of 117.55, second in the final one meter diving event, and swam lead off in the 400 freestyle relay (3:42.55) that finished in fifth place and was comprised of freshmen Nathan Levengood (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia) who swam second in the relay, Nathan Lorah (East Liverpool/Beaver Local) who swam third and John Sopko (Kent/Kent Theodore Roosevelt) who swam the fourth and final leg.
Junior Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) and sophomore Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep) finished 1-2 for the Raiders in the 50 free as Zappa finished in first place (22.29) and Birnbrich finished 0.02 seconds behind him for second place (22.31).
Sophomore Joe Simpson (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit) finished the 200 yard butterfly in first place with a time of 2:03.26.
Birnbrich finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:05.17.
The 400 yard freestyle (3:14.95) relay finished in first place and consisted of Brocious who swam the first leg of the relay, freshman Gavin Rundell (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon) who swam the second leg, Mike Zappa who swam the third leg and Greisl who swam the fourth and final leg of the relay.
Rundell took second in both of his individuals, the 200 freestyle (1:49.23) and the 200 butterfly (2:04.26).
Simpson participated in two relays as he swam butterfly in the 400 medley relay (3:45.18) that finished in second place and swam the fourth and final leg in the 4000 freestyle relay (3:29.39) that finished in third place.
The 400 medley relay was comprised Birnbrich who swam backstroke, sophomore Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles) who swam breaststroke and freshman Logan Rogers (Hartville/Archbishop Hoban) who swam freestyle.
The 400 freestyle relay was comprised of freshman Nikolas Barkley (Phoenix, Ariz/Desert Vista) who swam the first leg of the relay, junior Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia) who swam the second leg (Dover/New Philadelphia) and freshman Matt Campbell (Louisville/Louisville) who swam the third leg in the relay.
Branch finished second in the longest event in the meet, the 1650 freestyle (17:48.04) and finished third in the 200 backstroke (2:07.37).
Evans took third place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:28.64.
Melvin finished fifth in both of his events, the 200 IM (2:11.78) and the 200 breaststroke (2:30.78).
Lorah, Levengood and Sopko all swam in an exhibition heat of the 100 freestyle and finished with times of 55.93 and 1:00.64 and 1:08.70 respectively.
In his second and final event of the meet, Ruhe finished the 200 breaststroke in second place with a time of 2:26.88
Rogers finished the 50 free in fourth place with a time of 22.82 seconds.
Barkley too third in the 200 IM (2:10.51) and fourth in the 200 fly (2:02.20).
Moreland finished his only individual event, the 100 freestyle in sixth place and finished with a time of 54.22 seconds.
Campbell swam freestyle in the 400 yard medley relay (4:04.23) that finished in fifth place and was comprised of sophomores Ryan Kmet (North Royalton/North Royalton) who swam backstroke, Adam Figliuzzi (Bay Village/Bay) who swam breaststroke and Levengood who swam butterfly.
Kmet, Figliuzzi and freshman Jordan Fitch (Canton/Jackson) all swam in an exhibition heat of the 100 freestyle and finished with times of 57.05, 1:09.05 and 1:16.11 respectively.
Freshman Andrew Oktavec (Brunswick/Brunswick) finished fourth in both of his individual events, the 500 free (5:14.92) and the 1650 free (18:40.64).
Freshman Marcus Zappa (Amherst/Amherst Steele) took third in the 500 free (5:12.97) and fifth in the 200 free (1:56.59).
The Raiders next meet will be the OAC championships which is held Feb 14-16 in Akron, Ohio.
