Men’s Swimming Sets Three School Records On Day One of OAC Championships; Raiders in Second Place
AKRON, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's swimming and diving team set three records on its way to claiming second place after day one of the Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Ocasek Natatorium at The University of Akron.
Senior Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor) won the 500 yard freestyle and set a new school record in the process with a time of 4:38.19.
Brocious was also part of the seond place 400 medley relay team of senior Mike Greisl (South Euclid/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), junior Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) and sophomore Brian Ruhe (Versailles/Versailles) that set a new school record and earned an NCAA "B" cut in the event with a time of 3:25.58. The previous school record was set 26 years ago in 1987.
The 200 freestyle relay team of junior Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia), sophomore Hayden Birnbrich (Pataskala/Columbus St. Charles Prep), Zappa and Greisl finished in second place and set a new school record with a time of 1:24.31.
The Purple Raiders finished day one in second place with 210 points which is 71 points behind first place Ohio Northern (281).
The top three finishers in individual events and the top two relay teams in each event earn all-conference honors.
Day two of the Championships continues tomorrow with preliminaries starting at 11:00 am and finals at 6:00 p.m.
